B Corp Volunteering and Giving Back: The Spirit Behind Our Team
Part of the philosophy behind being a B Corp accredited business is about wider stakeholder engagement and community involvement, because being a B Corp isn’t just about how we operate as a company.
Of course, what better represents that than volunteering?
We recently asked our team to share the volunteering and community activities they are involved in.
The response was inspiring.
Supporting People in Our Communities
Several colleagues dedicate their time to supporting elderly and vulnerable people. One team member volunteers with Age Support as a “befriender”, visiting those who may be housebound or isolated – accompanying them to appointments, helping with shopping or simply sharing a conversation. In rural areas especially, loneliness can be a significant issue, and even a small amount of time can make a real difference.
Others volunteer through local churches and community groups, helping with litter picks, community events and supporting elderly residents.
Our team also support organisations such as Citizens Advice Bureau and NYAS, offering guidance and advocacy to people who need it most.
Supporting Veterans and Those in Need
One colleague volunteers with Armed Forces veterans who are adjusting to civilian life while managing mental health challenges and life-changing injuries. Through seminars and one-to-one conversations, they help signpost veterans to the support services available to them as they navigate returning to work.
Our team’s impact also reaches beyond the UK, with colleagues supporting Plymouth Ukraine Medical Aid (PUMA) in providing humanitarian assistance.
Building Stronger Communities
Community spirit shows itself in many ways. One team member founded a neighbourhood WhatsApp group that has grown from just 10 neighbours to nearly 100, and now volunteers as a Neighbourhood Watch Officer, attending meetings, working alongside local councillors and helping keep residents informed.
Others volunteer with organisations including Lions Club Dalbeattie, Tranmere Rovers in the Community, 12th Stockport Scouts, and local Park Run events.
Grassroots Sport and Inclusion
Sport is another area where our team give their time generously.
At Portland United Football Club, one colleague volunteers as a committee member, photographing matches, mentoring a young aspiring sports photographer, designing social media content, running a kids’ activity zone and supporting less-able fans to attend games.
Our team also volunteer with Ilkeston Swimming Club and local karate clubs, helping support grassroots participation and community engagement through sport.
Volunteering Through Passion
For some, volunteering is deeply personal. One colleague helps raise funds for the RNLI after losing their father at sea at the age of 17 and witnessing the dedication of volunteer lifeboat crews.
Another team member’s volunteering journey began with caring for rescue dogs at Battersea Dogs Home in London. After moving to Cheshire, they joined the committee of a local charity protecting a nature reserve, organising wildlife events and producing newsletters to raise awareness and funds. Today, they continue volunteering through their local church in Knutsford, helping with community events, litter picks and fundraising activities, including running a stall at the chapel’s Christmas fair to support the restoration of the historic building.
As they explain:
“I love volunteering as working from home can sometimes be a little isolating and being out in the community gives me the opportunity to connect with people, animals and nature and contribute, however I can, to make even the smallest difference.”
Enabled by Flexibility
Another colleague shared:
“The flexibility of working remotely for Document Direct has enabled me to volunteer and help others. Even just a couple of hours a week can make a real difference.”
We believe business can and should be a force for good. Our B Corp accreditation recognises not only the standards we uphold as an organisation, but the compassion and community spirit of the people who make up our team.
We couldn’t be prouder of the difference they are making in communities near and far.
