A trend has emerged during this past credit crunched year.  Why employ another person to do a job when it’s possible to simply retrain those already employed and let them take on the role.  For example, people managers who are quite IT savvy are now learning skills and embarking upon professional qualifications which will give them skills enough to be able to support their own systems,  in turn reducing IT support costs.

Changes to systems and procedures within a company also brings opportunity to employees.  One of Document Direct’s clients has said that their secretaries are now extremely efficient personal assistants, unqualified fee earners, and as a result, now too expensive to type.

Jeanne Hatton of Uniti Solutions has noticed this trend in her business of providing online distance learning, not only to the IT industry but also in management and leadership skills.  Jeanne says, “I’ve noticed a lot more people taking up courses in leadership and management because they are being given dual roles in their companies”.

If this is to be the case then there is definately one career for women to progress into.  An EC Report says there’s not enough women who are taking up a career in IT, in fact currently only 22% of the workforce are women.   Great news if you’re looking for a husband at work!

On a serious note, a 2008 McKinsey report has found that companies who have more women on their boards, more higher status women (CFO/CEO), and more women on the senior executive team, on average, outperform their sector in terms of return on equity, operating result and share price.  A report for Intellect, the IT Trade Body clearly shows that there is an equivalent case for gender diversity in the IT sector.

Gillian Arnold, Chair of the Intellect Women in IT Forum will discuss the business benefits of including women in your IT organisation, and the ways in which you can attract women to your business to be part of your successful organisation.

Gillian is currently a Technical Manager in IBM Systems Group and chairs the Intellect ‘Women in IT Forum’, sits on the board of Directors for the UKRC for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology, and contributes IT women’s groups, such as the BCS Strategic Forum for women.

Uniti Solutions specializes in training for IT professionals at all levels and offers a mentoring service for women in IT.  Jeanne Hatton will be exhibiting at the event to offer advice and support to those interested in gaining IT skills and qualifications to promote or change their career.  Jeanne will also be offering a promotional 10% discount for take up of courses on the day as well as the possibility of funding so you can have a 2 for 1 employee.

Document Direct will be exhibiting at the event to offer a no obligation trial of its services and offer advice in using or gaining further IT skills in Microsoft Certified Applications Specialist (MCAS).
